Anti discrimination unit
|
 |
|
As part of the Media Monitoring Project’s daily work, we undertake monitoring based on issues of discrimination. Falling under the Anti Discrimination Unit, it includes daily monitoring activities, which are most often presented as comprehensive analyses of media coverage of particular issues. These regular analyses highlight the presence of discriminatory reports, as well as reports that are exceptional in their challenging of stereotypes and discrimination.
The primary focus of the unit is to monitor human rights-related issues, including race, gender, children, poverty, HIV/AIDS, crime, disability and stories relating to Africa.
The aims and objectives of the Anti Discrimination Unit are:
- To highlight discriminatory reporting in a clear and understandable manner
- To promote debates and constructive discussions by working with the media to provide practical suggestions for improvement
- To defend the freedom of expression and human rights
- To extend and entrench a human rights culture within the media to better inform both the public and representative public bodies of human rights issues in the media
- To promote ethical journalism, by pointing out and helping to eradicate instances of unethical journalistic practice

Dear Mister President,
We at the MMP submit
the following wishes for the State of the Nation Address on Friday. These include:
- The Film and Publications Amendment bill
of 2005 is withdrawn, with apologies.
- The Home Affairs offices will be allowed
to concentrate and commit itself to its core tasks by moving the Film and
Publications board to a more media-focused body. This body could potentially be the
Department of Communications or ICASA.
- Announce an emergency action plan to
reinvigorate, refocus and reiterate ICASA’s fundamental and independent
role in regulating the broadcast and telecommunications environment.
- Continue to commit to developing media
diversity and pluralism in South
Africa through the introduction of
revised legislation for the Media Development and Diversity Agency (MDDA),
ensuring media industry doubles their contributions to the MDDA.
- Reaffirm the fundamental importance of a
critical, balanced and fair public service broadcaster that strives to meet
the needs of all people in South
Africa.
- Ensure the Sexual Offenses Bill and Child
Justice Bill are afforded the priority they deserve and with the necessary
input are passed as a matter of urgency.
- Kindly request to the reinstatement of John
Perlman to SAFM. We liked his show.
Thanking you in advance
for your kind consideration.
Yours Sincerely,
The Media Monitoring
Project (www.mediamonitoring.org.za)

We want Perlman back. We want more adult radio stations, i.e. a 5FM for the 35-55 year olds with music according to the generation.Call it 55FM. Karin.

Please note, this peice is a light-hearted look at some serious media issues, impacting on the freedom of the media. Numbers 1-6 are serious issues, where number 7 is a preferance issue. This letter was not submitted to the president as the tone is not appropriate to one of his stature.
