Women's month, last month saw a large amount of media coverage of women. The MMP is using our own Monitoring Made Easy software to analyse the media stories. Until we have all the results, we've looked at the period immediately surrounding Women's Day.
We also look at whether radio is doing all it can to improve women's lives in August's radio conference.
| Women’s Day 2007: Prominent women dominate newspapers
In this media update, we look at the coverage of women around National Women’s Day, and the day before and after in the daily print. The publication before and after National Women’s Day were investigated, for news media which publishes on a weekly basis. This was monitored in light of the Media Monitoring Project’s media challenge for 2007. Newspaper coverage around Women’s Day concentrated on prominent women, the dismissal of the Deputy Health Minister and gender-based violence.

| Monitoring Made Easy: Gender
Software Freedom Day was on the 10th of September.
The Media Monitoring Project has developed an African-first software package called the Monitoring Made Easy: Gender. It enables any Southern African organisation to monitor gender issues in the media. The software is now online.

| Intellectual Property Rights in the Media?
And related to open software... Intellectual Property Rights (IPR). These pose a challenge to media in South Africa and around the world. This is not surprising, as the regulatory and legal framework surrounding IPR is also imperfect. This research aimed to examine media coverage and consider what is not covered in regard to IPR.
