Media's human right's obligations

It may be fair to assume that the relationship between media and human rights is that media reports on human rights issues. But this is only half the picture. Media also has a role in upholding human rights issues in their reporting. This obligation is two-fold, in that the audience should be educated about their rights and human rights issues in general, but in doing so, media also should also be careful not to violate human rights when covering vulnerable groups.

Media Monitoring Project submits complaint about Daily Sun reporting on xenophobia by MMP
After much speculation about the media’s influence on the recent outbreaks of xenophobic violence, Daily Sun is now subject of an official complaint about their coverage of non-nationals. The Media Monitoring Project (MMP) and its partner Consortium for Refugees and Migrants in South Africa (CoRMSA) submitted a complaint with Press Ombudsman Joe Thloloe and the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHCR) today.

    Quality is a difficult concept to operationalise across the broad spectrum of media. This newsletter presents different pieces which grapple with the concept as can be practiced.
    Women's Day early results and gender monitoring by MMP
    Women's month, last month saw a large amount of media coverage of women. The MMP is using our own Monitoring Made Easy software to analyse the media stories. Until we have all the results, we've looked at the period immediately surrounding Women's Day. We also look at whether radio is doing all it can to improve women's lives in August's radio conference.
