Addressing the state of the media

Following President Mbeki’s state of the nation address, the Media Monitoring Project (MMP) would like to add the following state of the media in South Africa observations. In line with the MMP’s mandate we looked at a number of human rights issues and their relationship to the media. These include press freedom, race and racism, gender, HIV and AIDS, children, and the local government elections.

Crime and the President

Crime is always a prominent issue in the news. It is particularly prominent currently. So, MMP undertook to look at different crime stories and see if human rights were upheld. Firstly, we looked at trends in covering stories where women murder their husbands and then examined a story on alleged police brutality of a sex worker.

You requested to be kept informed of issues affecting children in the media. MMP is very concerned about the advertising of fast food to children considering the rates of childhood obesity in South Africa. Urgent action is necessary to curb this trend.

This newsletter presents different pieces which grapple with the concept as can be practiced. | | Women's Day early results and gender monitoring by MMP | | Women's month, last month saw a large amount of media coverage of women. The MMP is using our own Monitoring Made Easy software to analyse the media stories. Until we have all the results, we've looked at the period immediately surrounding Women's Day.
