Media Monitoring Project submits complaint about Daily Sun reporting on xenophobia

After much speculation about the media’s influence on the recent outbreaks of xenophobic violence, Daily Sun is now subject of an official complaint about their coverage of non-nationals. The Media Monitoring Project (MMP) and its partner Consortium for Refugees and Migrants in South Africa (CoRMSA) submitted a complaint with Press Ombudsman Joe Thloloe and the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHCR) today.

Women's Day early results and gender monitoring

Women's month, last month saw a large amount of media coverage of women. The MMP is using our own Monitoring Made Easy software to analyse the media stories. Until we have all the results, we've looked at the period immediately surrounding Women's Day. We also look at whether radio is doing all it can to improve women's lives in August's radio conference.

Currently, the Media Monitoring Project (MMP) is supporting media freedom and best practice, in two different ways. One is through using media monitoring and feedback to media and the other is to ensure codes of conduct reflect human rights ideas. This newsletter reflects MMP’s challenge to media to make women’s day work for women and our submission to the ICASA code of conduct for broadcasters.

June is the month for cold, youth and refugees. This is what we cover in this newsletter (except the cold).
Are you aware that South Africa was the main destination, worldwide, for new asylum-seekers in 2006? The most vulnerable groups within refugee communities being women and children. Poor media coverage can worsen their plight considerably.
This month we have a few resources for youth and a commentary piece about refugee coverage around World Refugee Day.

Press Freedom Day Special

The 3rd of May is World Press freedom day. Press freedom in South Africa is being threatened by the Films and Publications Bill. MMP's director, William Bird, has just delivered our submission to the Films and Publications Ammendment Bill in Parliament. In this special, this Bill is discussed and why MMP is concerned about it, as well as how MMP is working with media to address a key concern of the Bill, the coverage of children.

Media's human right's obligations

It may be fair to assume that the relationship between media and human rights is that media reports on human rights issues. But this is only half the picture. Media also has a role in upholding human rights issues in their reporting. This obligation is two-fold, in that the audience should be educated about their rights and human rights issues in general, but in doing so, media also should also be careful not to violate human rights when covering vulnerable groups.
